Email Marketing Strategy Template

By Marc Cronin, August 2026

Most email marketing fails because there is no strategy. Here is a practical template you can use today.

Step 1: Define Your Audience

Who are you writing to? Customer personas, pain points, buying stage. The more specific, the better your emails perform.

Step 2: Map Your Sequences

Every subscriber goes through a journey. Welcome sequence (5 emails over 10 days), nurture sequence (weekly value), launch sequence (when you have something to sell), and win back sequence (for inactive subscribers).

Step 3: Set Your Metrics

Open rate, click rate, conversion rate, revenue per email. Track these weekly. If open rates drop below 20%, your subject lines need work. Below 2% click rate, your content needs work.

Step 4: Create Your Content Calendar

Plan 4 weeks ahead. Mix value content with promotional content. The 80/20 rule: 80% value, 20% promotional. See our email marketing consulting services.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good email open rate?

Average is 20 to 25%. Above 30% is good. Below 15% means your subject lines or sending frequency need adjustment.

How often should I send emails?

Weekly is the sweet spot for most businesses. More than twice a week risks unsubscribes. Less than monthly means subscribers forget you.
